While QPAC’s theatres were shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic, we went to our audiences with work from our artists, stages and studios through the QPAC At Home series.
In this special performance brought to you by QPAC and introduced by QPAC Producer Paul Dellit, Jason Barry-Smith sings a few of his favourite songs, alongside Luke Volker on piano.
Jason is an operatic baritone and a regular guest on QPAC stages performing with Opera Queensland and Queensland Symphony Orchestra amongst many others.
THE MUSIC
Franz Lehár: ‘You are my heart’s delight’ (from The Land of Smiles)
This beautiful song is perhaps the most famous example of what became known as a ‘Tauberlied’ – a song specifically written to highlight the vocal qualities of Lehar’s close friend tenor Richard Tauber who performed the lead role in numerous productions of Lehar operettas.
Gilbert & Sullivan: ‘When I Was a Lad’ (from HMS Pinafore)
This popular classic features Sir Joseph describing his meteoric rise to the position of First Lord of the Admiralty, despite having never seen a ship.
Cole Porter: ‘The Tale of the Oyster’ (from Fifty Million Frenchmen)
This witty number from the 1929 Broadway hit musical sends up high society with the tale of a ‘bivalve social climber’.
